Abel Selaocoe

Born in Sebokeng, Johannesburg, South Africa in 1992, Abel Selaocoe is an acclaimed cellist known for a repertoire that covers both classical and jazz music. At the age of 11, he took his first cello lessons while attending school. After he completed his musical studies in South Africa, he relocated to Manchester, England and attended the Royal Conservatory of Music. Although he focused on classical training, he dabbled in jazz and immersed himself in the folk music of South Africa. Inspired by the music and culture of his homeland, Abel Selaocoe formed the trio Chesaba in 2016. He also began to collaborate with more musicians and perform as both a soloist and a member of ensembles and orchestras including the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Manchester Collective, and the Britten Sinfonia. In 2019, he participated in the 100 Cellos Live event in Italy, and was soon contacted by British composer Karl Jenkins, who had him perform on several of his religious works. Abel Selacocoe signed with Warner Classics and released his debut album, Where Is Home (Hae Ke Kae), in 2022. The album featured his interpretations of baroque works by J. S. Bach and G. B. Platti as well as several of his own compositions.
