The Japanese songwriter Yasu launched his career as the frontman of Janne Da Arc, leading the visual kei band to Top 10 success on the Oricon Albums chart before launching a solo career under the name Acid Black Cherry. The project was launched in 2007 in the Hirakata neighborhood of Osaka, where Yasu had formed Janne Da Arc more than 15 years prior. Yasu played 15 shows across Japan during the summer of 2007 before releasing his debut single, "SPELL MAGIC," in July. The song reached number 4 on the Oricon Top 20 and was followed later that year by "Black Cherry" and "Aishitenai," both of which hit number 2. Between 2008 and 2014, Acid Black Cherry returned to the upper reaches of the Oricon Singles chart 15 more times and earned a gold certification for the Top 5 hit "Greed Greed Greed." He experienced similar success with his albums, debuting with BLACKLIST in 2008 before returning with 2009's Q.E.D. Both releases reached number 2 in Japan, and Acid Black Berry earned his first Number 1 hit with his third record, 『2012』, which was released during the titular year. L -el- reached number 2 in 2017, and Acid Black Cherry returned to Number 1 two years later with his fifth album of original material, Acid BLOOD Cherry. The record proved to be Yasu's last under the Acid Black Cherry name, with the project lapsing into inactivity in 2017.
