Alfred Sim received his big break in 2014, when the Mandopop vocalist was named the winner of Project SuperStar's third season. He was born as "Alfred Sim Chee Hao" in Singapore on October 4, 1981, and unsuccessfully auditioned for the first season of the Singaporean television competition Project SuperStar in 2005. By the following decade, he was performing local shows as a wedding singer and attracting wider attention as the vocalist of "Homeland," the theme song for the television series The Journey: A Voyage. Released in 2013, the song was nominated as "Best Drama Theme Song" at the Star Awards 20 ceremony. Sim auditioned for the third season of Project SuperStar in 2014 and became one of the show's finalists, eventually winning the competition in late October. His debut single, "Lover," was released the following year, with the debut EP Alfred following in 2016. Alfred Sim's biggest success arrived in 2017, when "最美的时光" — his contribution to the soundtrack of the TV drama If Only I Could — became an award-winning theme song. "最美的时光" was nominated for "Best Theme Song" at the 2017 Asian Television Awards and won a Star Award in the same category. Sim continued recording theme songs for Singaporean shows during the following years, with highlights including "弹指间" (from 2018's Till We Meet Again) and "反话" (from 2021's CTRL).
