Ami Suzuki

Born on 9 February 1982 in Zama, Japan, the popular singer and actor Ami Suzuki (鈴木亜美, Suzuki Ami) rose through the ranks of the Japanese entertainment industry during the late 1990s after being discovered as a teen idol on the televised talent show Asayan. She first captured the public's attention at the age of 14 when she signed with Toshiba-EMI and dropped her debut single, "Love the Island," in 1999. The song, which went to number five on the Oricon chart, was repurposed to promote tourism on the Japanese island of Guam, which helped to boost its profile. Next, she went on to land a number three spot in Japan with "Alone In My Room" and continued to grow her presence with hits like the dance-oriented "All Night Long" (1998). Featured on her debut 1999 album SA, its success ultimately paved the way for her Best New Artist accolade at the Japan Music Awards in 1998. She was a regular fixture on the Oricon charts throughout the early 2000s, soaring to the top with hits like "Thank You 4 Every Day Every Body" (2000) and arriving at number two with "Delightful" (2005) and "リトル クリスタル (Crystal/To be Free/Place/Carry out)" in 2006 while evolving her style to blend pop, dance, and electronic elements. In addition to her music career, she has appeared in various Japanese TV dramas, variety shows, and films, both as a singer and actor, first carving out her path on the 2006 movie Rainbow Song and making notable appearances on the Japanese variety show circuit. Despite facing challenges early in her career, including a brief hiatus due to a controversial legal dispute that saw her sever ties with her label, she made a comeback as an indie artist in the mid-2000s, changing her artist name to 鈴木亜美, her real name written in kanji. "Forever Love," her fourteenth single and first on her own label Amity, enjoyed some commercial success, and several other albums followed in its wake, including Dolce and Supreme Show in 2008. After a long break, she returned in 2022 with a new single, "Drip"—her first since 2009's “KISS KISS KISS / aishiteru…”—and followed it with "I Just Feel Good" in 2023.
