Born on December 28th, 1959 in Madrid, Spanish singer Ana Torroja Fungairiño first rose to fame as the frontwoman of high-flyers Mecano, who ruled the Spanish pop scene throughout the '80s and '90s. Prior to the trio splitting up for good in 1998, she began a decades-long solo career under the name Ana Torroja, through which she has so far notched up eight studio albums and a wealth of cover songs and duets. Her debut album, Puntos Cardinales, was released in 1997 with its follow-up, Points Cardinaux, also arriving that year. However, her solo breakthrough came in 1999 with the album Pasajes de un Sueño (Passages of a dream), which yielded a best-selling single in "Ya No Te Quiero" ("I don't love you anymore" or "I don't want you anymore"). With her fourth, self-titled album of 2001, she looked at winning back the French audience she had won previously over in Mecano, while for her fifth LP, Frágil (Fragile) of 2003, she amped up the pop and picked up numerous nominations and prizes for her effort, including the Grammy Latino, Shangay (Spain) and Oye (Mexico). Taking a few years away out from her solo musical endeavours, she forged a collaboration with Mexican singer, composer, and keyboard player Aleks Syntek on the song "Duele el Amor" ("Love hurts") in 2004, also releasing a duet with Italian singer Gigi D'Alessio, "Bacio" ("kiss" in Italian), that same year. In 2006, she unveiled her sixth studio album, Me Cuesta Tanto Olvidarte, which was produced by Aleks Syntek and featured new versions of old Mecano hits. The LP's first single, "Los Amantes", rose to Number 2 on the Spanish charts. On 10 October 2008, Ana Torroja was seriously injured in a car crash in Cádiz but was able to make a full recovery. Two years later, she issued her fifth studio album in Spanish, Sonrisa ("smile"), which was produced by Venezuelan-born producer Andrés Levin, who also steered her second album. In 2021, Ana Torroja re-emerged with her first new album in 11 years; the slick, glossy pop of Mil Razones, which was produced by El Guincho, Alizzz, Livinlargeinvenus, Pional, and Henry Sáez.
