Classical organist, harpsichordist, and pianist Anthony Newman was born on May 12, 1941, in Los Angeles, California. He is best known for a repertoire that focuses on the Baroque era with an affinity for the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. Interested in the music of Bach since he was a child, he studied the organ between the ages of 10 and 17. He then studied at the École Normale de Musique de Paris, where he earned a diplôme supérieur. After returning to the US, he attended the Mannes School of Music, where he earned his B.S. in 1963. He also studied at Harvard University and Boston University. He made his professional debut performing Bach organ works in 1967 at the Carnegie Recital Hall in New York. Anthony Newman’s recording career including him covering many of Bach’s works on organ, piano, and harpsichord. He also recorded the works of other composers including Beethoven and Mozart. His recorded output included Anthony Newman Plays J. S. Bach on the Pedal Harpsichord and Organ (1968), Organ Orgy (A Wagner Sound Spectacular) (1975), Beethoven: The Five Piano Concertos - Choral Fantasy (1987), Scarlatti: Sonatas (1989), Anthony Newman's Keyboard Companion (1989), Bach: Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue, Toccatas for Harpsichord (1996), and Bach 2000. As a teacher, Anthony Newman held positions at the Juilliard School in New York, the State University of Purchase in New York, and the Indiana University. Later in his career, he began conducting and then began to use his skills as a composer. He released several albums of his own compositions including Newman: Te Deum Laudamus (2013), Newman: 12 Preludes and Fugues in Ascending Key Order for Piano Solo (2013), and Newman: 4 Symphonies (2016). In 2023, Anthony Newman released the album Franck: 12 Pieces for Organ.
