Antonio Meneses is an acclaimed Brazilian cellist who performs with major artists and orchestras around the world. Born to a family of musicians on Brazil's northern seacoast, he studied with Antonio Janigro in Germany and won the gold medal in the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1982 playing mandatory variations on a rococo theme by Tchaikovsky and the Dvorak Concerto. His first album, 'Johannes Brahms: Violinkonzert; Doppelkonzert' in 1983, was with violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Herbert von Karajan and for several years he performed at top festivals such as the Festival Pablo Casals in Puerto Rico, the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York and other events in Austria, France, Germany, Israel and Switzerland. 'Dvorak: Quartet Op. 51; Sextet Op. 48' (1996) features violinist Josef Suk and the Stamic Quartet and his other releases include works by Schumann, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Graziani, Beethoven, Haydn, Brahms, Bach and Tchaikovsky. He performed with Beaux Arts Trio for several years and played on their 2006 album 'Shostakovich: Piano Trios 1 & 2, Seven Romances On Verses By Alexander Blok', which was nominated for a Grammy Award as Best Chamber Music Performance. His own recording of 'Hans Gál, Edward Elgar: Cello Concertos' with the Northern Sinfonia conducted by Claudio Cruz was nominated for a Grammy for Best Classical Instrumental Solo in 2012. In 2017 he released 'Tchaikovsky: Variations on a Rococo Theme, Schumann: Cello Concerto' with the Northern Sinfonia under Claudio Cruz. He teaches annually at the Accademia Chigiana in Sienna and performs regularly with 2018 dates to include other venues in Italy plus Ukraine, Switzerland and Brazil.
