Aobozu

The Japanese alternative rock band Aobozu was formed in 1999 in Odawara, Kanagawa. Originally known as "The Blue Boss," the group featured a founding lineup of frontman Hozzy, drummer Kamei and bassist Shinichi Fujimori, all three of whom met as children in Odawara. The musicians adopted a new name, Aobozu, in 2000, then added guitar player Yūichi Tanaka to the roster one year later. Aobozu, the group's self-titled debut album, was independently released via Buddy Records in 2003, reaching Number 125 on the Oricon chart and paving the way for the moderately successful singles "Shizuku" and "Sora." Both of those songs appeared on Aobozu's second album, Hiroshige Blue, which reached Number 30 in Japan upon its release in 2004. Now signed to the major label Toy's Factory, Aobozu continued to reach the Top 30 with albums like 2005's Soda and 2006's Hanamidori, which peaked at 29 and 26, respectively. The band found similar success on the Oricon Singles chart, where 2005's "Uzura" reached Number 35 in 2005, followed later that year by the Number 40 hit "Spoon." By the time Forestone arrived in 2008, Aobozu was one of the country's most successful rock bands, hitting Number 19 with the single "Hello Goodbye," Number 24 with "Coin Toss," Number 30 with "Sora o Tsukuritaku Nakatta," and Number 29 with "Kotoba no Mori." The album itself reached Number 15. After hitting Number 10 with 2010's Mizukane, the band spent the rest of the decade releasing critically-acclaimed albums like Noctiluca (2012), Bloomery (2013), and Moenai Kaseki (2019). Such success continued during the early 2020s, with the group reaching Number 52 with 2023's 月の円盤.
