Barney Artist, whose real identity remains unknown, is a British rapper from East London. Drawing inspiration from the jazz-tinged hip hop of A Tribe Called Quest or The Roots, he first popped up in the music scene with his 2012 EP BAEP, followed by his debut mixtape Bespoke in 2014. In the subsequent years, Barney Artist became more and more involved with the burgeoning hip hop scene in London, striking a creative partnership with producers Tom Misch and Jordan Rakei as well as with longtime friend and collaborator Alfa Mist. In 2016, he dropped a second mixtape titled Painting Sounds, which featured beats by producer Jake Milliner and appearances by Jay Prince, Emmavie, Ruby Wood, and Nick Brewer. Preceded by the single “Apologies,” his highly awaited studio debut Home Is Where the Art Is arrived in 2018. In the following years, Barney Artist issued the EP Bikes Are Bikes (2019), the mixtape LoFi Lockdown: The Re-Issue, and The Locket (2021), a collaborative album with Bombay Bicycle Club’s Jack Steadman as Mr Jukes.
