Formerly known as Star Hunt Academy Boys or SHA Boys, the Filipino boy group BGYO was formed through the program ABS-CBN Star Hunt Academy and made its debut in 2021 under the entertainment company Star Magic. Unlike their contemporaries, the five-piece consisting of Akira, Gelo, JL, Mikki, and Nate is usually involved in the creative process, co-writing most of their songs. The group, whose name is an acronym for “Becoming the change, Going further, You and I, Originally Filipino,” was officially presented on the online pre-show of the PBB Otso Big Night. In January 2021, they made their debut with the single “The Light,” which featured English and Filipino lyrics and accumulated millions of views on BGYO’s video-sharing channel. That same year, they contributed to the soundtrack of the film He’s Into Her and collaborated with Keiko Necesario on the track “Runnin.” Written by renowned songwriters Tha Aristocratz and TC Mack, known for their work with the likes of Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber, their second single “The Baddest” arrived in August 2021 and quickly rose to the top of the streaming charts in their native Philippines.
