Although formed as a noise rock act, Blonde Redhead evolved its sound throughout the 1990s, 2000s, and beyond, incorporating new sounds like alternative rock, dream pop, and shoegaze. The band was founded in 1993 by Kazu Makino, Amedeo Pace, Simone Pace, and Maki Takahashi. After the release of Blonde Redhead's self-titled debut album in 1994 and its follow-up, La Mia Vita Violenta, in 1995, Takahashi left the lineup. The band released 1997's Fake Can Be Just as Good, 1998's In an Expression of the Inexpressible, and 2000's Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons as a trio. Misery Is a Butterfly arrived in 2004 and became Blonde Redhead's first release to chart, reaching number 180 on the Billboard 200 and number 10 on the Heatseekers Albums chart. The self-produced 23 followed in 2007, featuring a softer chamber-pop sound that increased the band's commercial appeal. 23 reached number 63 in America, a career high for the group. After 2010's Penny Sparkle and 2014's Barragán, the band spent several years focusing on different projects, including the soundtrack to the Danish film The Commentator. Sit Down For Dinner, Blonde Redhead's first album of original material in nearly a decade, followed in 2023.
