Irishman Bob Geldof was the leader of a rock band, The Boomtown Rats, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, then an actor in the role of the famous schizophrenic singer Pink, in Alan Parker's no less famous film Pink Floyd: The Wall, before becoming a major activist on the world rock scene, instigator of the Band Aid, Live Aid (1985) and Live 8 (2005) projects, the biggest charity concerts ever organized. He was knighted by the Queen of England, then made a Commander of the British Empire, and despite controversy continued his diplomatic career to promote development on the African continent.
