Brand X was a British jazz band formed in London, England in 1974. Founded by guitarist John Goodsall and bassist Percy Jones, the original line-up also included keyboardist Robin Lumley, drummer John Dillon, guitarist Peter Bonas and percussionist and lead vocalist Phil Spinelli. However, John Dillon would leave the band in early 1975 and was replaced by Genesis member Phil Collins. By the time Brand X recorded their debut album, Unorthodox Behaviour (1976), the group was a quartet featuring Goodsall, Jones, Lumley, and Collins. The band’s line-up would continue to change over the years although Goodsall and Jones would remain in the line-up throughout most of their career. Brand X continued to release critically acclaimed albums including Moroccan Roll (1977), Masques (1978), Product (1979), and Do They Hurt? (1980) before breaking up. Two years after the band’s split, the album Is There Anything About? was released and featured leftover recordings from 1979. In 1992, Goodsall and Jones put another Brand X band together and released the album X-Communication. That reunion album was followed by Manifest Destiny in 1997. Brand X took another break in 1999, returning to action in 2016. They released two concert albums - But Wait. There's More! (2017) and Locked & Loaded (2018). On November 10, 2021, John Goodsall died at the age of 68. Shortly after, Jones and Lumley announced that Brand X had come to an end with the death of Goodsall. Robin Lumley died on March 9, 2023, at the age of 74.
