Before working together as leaders of the American roots-rock band Briscoe, songwriters Truett Heintzelman and Philip Lupton first crossed paths at a summer camp in the Texas Hill Country. That landscape would go on to inspire the rustic, outdoorsy spirit of Briscoe's sound, which the bandmates began crafting in 2019 while attending college in Austin, Texas. After building an audience on the school's campus, Briscoe began playing local venues like Antone's Nightclub and The Continental Club Gallery, selling copies of their debut recording, the self-titled Briscoe EP, at the shows. The band also began opening shows for national acts like Caamp and Zach Bryan, which attracted the attention of ATO Records. Heintzelman and Lupton eventually signed with the label while still pursuing degrees as undergraduate college students, and they began making weekend trips to North Carolina to record their debut album with producer Brad Cook. Known for his work with Hiss Golden Messenger and Megafaun, Cook captured Briscoe's mix of folk, country, and heartland rock & roll. The album, West of It All, was readied for release in 2023, months after the musicians' college graduation. During the weeks before its official release, the band released two advance singles, "Sparrows" and "The Well." The latter track became the group's first hit, entering Billboard's Adult Alternative Songs chart at Number 40 in August 2023.
