Listening to records by Little Walter, accompanied by Muddy Waters, the young Carey learned to play the harmonica in Mississippi. Emigrating to Chicago in the '50s, he worked as a mover and shaker, earning a place in Chicago clubs with his powerful, full-bodied breath and warm voice. He came to Europe in 1968-1969 with Earl and John Lee Hooker and recorded Blues Harp for Delmark, the first of a long series of albums, most of them of the highest quality. Accompanying Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon and Big Walter Horton, Carey also led his own bands, often featuring his son, the brilliant guitarist Lurrie Bell. Today, Carey Bell is one of Chicago blues' finest harmonica players.
