An undeniable link between the heavy sound of Black Sabbath and the doom metal wave of the late eighties, Cathedral has nevertheless left its fame to others. The band from Coventry (West Midlands) seems doomed to the sometimes unenviable status of cult band, despite a discography dotted with The Ehereal Mirror (1993) and The Carnival Bizarre (1995), two pure albums of licked doom. Benefiting from a rich instrumentation, Cathedral now slipped into the symphonic metal wake with The Garden of Unearhly Delights (2006) and The Guessing Game (2010). After announcing their intention to retire, Cathedral released their final album, The Last Spire, in 2013.
