Chebere

Chebere is a legendary cuarteto music band hailing from Argentina, with a career spanning over four decades. They are often cited as one of the most innovative groups in the genre, introducing themes of romance and heartbreak as well as then-unorthodox instruments like electric guitar and synthesizers. The band's earliest incarnation appeared in 1973 in the city of Cordoba and consisted of Chébere Eduardo “Pato” Lugones (leader), Hugo “Huesito” Terragni (violin), Angel “Negro” Videla (piano), Alberto “Beto” Guillen (double bass), Alberto Pizzichini (accordion), and Daniel “Sebastián” Reyna (singer). Named after a Caribbean Spanish slang word for "cool," Chebere quickly became a household name in the world of cuarteto, a genre with marked influences from Spanish pasodoble and Italian tarantella that originated in Cordoba in the 1940s. In their early days, Chebere performed at local clubs and events, building up a loyal fan base in the Cordoba region. Even though their studio debut Cuarteto Chebere was released in 1974, it wasn't until 1977 that the group finally achieved widespread fame with their third album, Esto es Chebere, Volumen 2. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Chebere continued to dominate the cuarteto music scene, touring extensively across the country and releasing albums such as the compilation 15 Años de Chebere, which featured the hit single "Odio los Lunes," or 1993's ACE-winning Chebere en Hollywood, recorded at Universal Studios. In addition to their decades-spanning catalog, the band has also served as a platform for many up-and-coming cuarteto vocalists that would later achieve success in their own right, including Fernando Bladys, el Negro Videla, and Pelusa. They have also been recognized for their contributions to Argentine music, receiving the prestigious Konex Award in 1995, 2005, and 1995. Led by Alberto Guillen and Eduardo Lugones, the only remaining members from its original lineup, Chebere re-emerged in the 2020s, this time with singers Gustavo "Toro" Corvalán, Gary Navaja, and Pepe Celiz.
