Chihiro Yamanaka

Born in Kiryū, Japan on December 26, 1974, Chihiro Yamanaka is a jazz pianist and composer. After winning a competition in Japan at the age of 12, she trained at the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she graduated in 2000. Returning to Japan, she became a popular artist in her homeland, releasing critically acclaimed albums for Verve Records such as Outside by the Swing (2005), Abyss (2007), After Hours (2008), and Reminisce (2011). Referred to as ‘one of the most exciting jazz pianists and composers of her generation’, Chihiro Yamanaka has toured many parts of the world, performing at many prestigious venues including the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Carnegie Hall, the Vienna Opera House and many others. Moving to New York City in 2012, she eventually signed to Blue Note Records and released a series of albums including Somethin’ Blue (2014), Syncopation Hazard (2015), Monk Studies (2017), and Rosa (2020).
