Cody Johnson is an American country singer from Sebastopol, Texas, where he was born on May 21, 1987. He started playing music at the age of 12, but delayed the launch of his solo career to work as a bull rider for rodeos and a prison guard first. He then released his debut album, Black and White Label, on his own CoJo label in 2006 and sold CDs from the back of his pick-up truck on the rodeo circuit. While working as a prison guard, he formed the Cody Johnson Band and played regional clubs during weekends. He eventually became a full-time musician and released the live album Live and Rocking in 2007. His next studio albums were Six Strings One Dream in 2009 and A Different Day in 2011, both of which helped solidify his popularity in Texas. Cowboy Like Me proved to be his national breakthrough album in 2014, reaching number seven on the Billboard Country Charts. The follow-up album Gotta Be Me fared even better, reaching Number 2 in 2016 and producing the hit single "Wild As You," which helped spark a bidding war amongst major labels. He signed with Warner and earned his first Top 40 hit with the platinum-certified "On My Way to You," which appeared on the 2019 album Ain't Nothin' to It. The album itself climbed to Number 1 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart and was followed by 2021's Human: The Double Album, which peaked at Number 3. Human: The Double Album featured the chart-topping country hit "'Til You Can't," which also received a Grammy Award for "Best Country Song" in 2022, and was followed by Johnson's third major-label LP, Leather, in November 2023.
