Born on August 4 1967, the son of composer Richard Hutchinson and nephew of R&B singer Willie Hutch, the rapper and producer known professionally as Cold 187um (real name Gregory Fernard Hutchinson) gained national attention as the leader of G-funk originators Above the Law. Founded in Pomona, California in 1987, the group signed to Easy-Z's Ruthless Records in 1989 and dropped their first full-length record, Livin' Like Hustlers, in 1990. Above the Law maintained their career across a slew of further albums including 1994's Uncle Sam's Curse—their last record for Ruthless—and 2009's Sex, Money & Music, but decided to call it quits three years later following the death of crew member KMG the Illustrator. Cold 187um embarked on a solo career as a producer and rapper in the late 1990s and released his debut solo album, Executive Decisions, in 1999, also working as a producer with rapper Kokane on the 1994 album Funk upon a Rhyme, MC Ren on 1996's The Villain in Black and on the posthumous LP of 2Pac, Until the End of Time, in 2001. He put out solo albums at a consistent rate, releasing third studio LP Fresh Out the Pen following a 105-week stint in prison on drug trafficking charges, fifth album The Only Solution in 2012 and self-produced project The Big Hit in 2014. 2021 saw the releease of The Resurrection of Gangster Rap album with a follow-up EP, I'm a Muthaphukkin Rider, released in 2022.
