Crippled Black Phoenix is a British post-rock band led by multi-instrumentalist Justin Greaves, who formed the group with Mogwai's longtime bassist, Dominic Aitchison, in 2004. Previously, Greaves had served as a drummer for doom metal bands like Iron Monkey and Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine. He pursued a different direction with Crippled Black Phoenix, whose early records made room for acoustic guitars, folk influences, Victorian-era instruments, and psychedelic overtones. A Love of Shared Disasters, the band's debut, was released in 2007, featuring a lineup that included vocalist Joe Volk. The Resurrectionists and Night Raider both followed in 2009. As Crippled Black Phoenix's career progressed, the band's roster began to change frequently, with more than 20 musicians eventually passing through the group's ranks. Volk left the band in 2012 in order to launch a solo career, and Swedish frontman Daniel Anghede took his place one year later. Meanwhile, Crippled Black Phoenix remained prolific in the studio, releasing White Light Generator in 2014, New Dark Age in 2015, Bronze in 2016, and Great Escape in 2018. Anghede left the band in 2019, and Crippled Black Phoenix returned the following year with Ellengæst, an album featuring several guest singers. A new vocalist, Joel Segerstedt, had joined the band by 2021, and Crippled Black Phoenix reemerged in 2022 with another studio effort, Banefyre.
