Maria Cristina Mel de Almeida Costa, better known by the public as Cristina Mel, is a Brazilian singer and songwriter in the Contemporary Christian Music genre. She was born on March 10, 1964 in Brás de Pina, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She first discovered her passion for Christian Music after seeing the American group The Continental Singers and Orchestra, a turning point in her personal and professional life. Cristina Mel made her debut in 1990 with the album Ta Decidido, but it was 1992’s Pra Sempre that would propel her into popularity in Brazil. She was extremely prolific throughout the 1990s, releasing both Christian and secular music. In 1999 Cristina Mel also started releasing music for children, such as her 2004 album Tempo de Ser Criança, which includes songs such as the poignant children’s ballad “Canção Para Vovó.” In 2005, Cristina Mel released the live album The Songs of My Life, which received a nomination for the Latin Grammys. 2007 saw the release of the album Alcanzar Tu Corazón, which includes new versions of various songs from her career adapted to Spanish and English. In 2014, after signing to Sony Music, Cristina Mel released the album Fazendo a Diferença, which involved the participation of her daughter Isabela Mel. Rompendo o Silencio was released in 2019.
