Ashton Dumar Norwill Simmonds – born on April 5, 1995, in Toronto, Canada - is a singer-songwriter better known as Daniel Caesar. Born in the Scarborough district of Toronto, he grew up in a musical household and began performing at his local church at a very young age, citing soul and gospel music as some of his earliest influences. After being kicked out of his house at the age of 17, he adopted the stage name Daniel Caesar and began playing gigs around the city of Toronto. Following the release of the critically acclaimed EPs Praise Break (2014) and Pilgrim’s Paradise (2015), both heavily inspired by his religious upbringing, he made his big breakthrough in 2017 with his studio debut Freudian, which was shortlisted for the 2018 Polaris Music Prize and earned Daniel Caesar a nomination for Best R&B Album at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards. Included on the album was the single “Get You,” a collaborative track with Colombian singer Kali Uchis that was nominated for Best R&B Performance. Daniel Caesar would go on to win the category a year later thanks to the single “Best Part” (featuring H.E.R.), which was also featured on Freudian. Daniel Caesar’s 2019 album Case Study 01 featured guest appearances from Pharrell Williams, John Mayer, Brandy, and others. The album reached Number 6 in Canada, Number 3 on Billboard’s R&B Albums chart, Number 17 on the Billboard 200, and Number 26 in Australia. His third album, Never Enough (2023), included the singles “Do You Like Me?” “Let Me Go,” and “Valentina.”
