Danilo Caymmi

Danilo Caymmi – born Danilo Candido Tostes Caymmi on March 7, 1948, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – is musician, composer, singer, and arranger best known for his collaborations with Tom Jobim. Born into a musical family – he is the son of Brazilian composer Dorival Caymmi and singer Stella Maris, and the brother of Nana Caymmi and Dori Caymmi – Danilo Caymmi began studying the flute and violão (acoustic guitar) at a young age. His musical career began in 1963 when he began a three decade-long musical collaboration with Brazilian musician and composer Tom Jobim. His career as a composer began in 1967 when his song "De Brincadeira" was recorded by Mário Castro-Neves in 1967. He collaborated with other songwriters including Edmundo Souto and Paulinho Tapajós, with whom he wrote “Adança”, which became a classic and was recorded by many artists over the years. Danilo Caymmi also co-wrote other classics including "Casaco Marrom (Bye, Bye Ceci)" (1969). Apart from his most well-known songs, he also composed music for TV series and soap operas including Mulheres de Areia, Corpo e Alma, and Riacho Doce. Danilo Caymmi also served as a sideman for jazz icons such as vocalist Sarah Vaughan. While collaborating with his father and his siblings, he branched out as a solo artist, first appearing on the 1973 album Beto Guedes, Danilo Caymmi, Novelli, Toninho Horta before issuing the acclaimed 1977 album Cheiro Verde. Danilo Caymmi joined Tom Jobim’s Nova Banda in 1983, where he gained experience as an arranger. Tom Jobim encouraged him to focus on a career as a vocalist. He released the album Caymmi’s Grandes Amigos (1986) and a live album with his family in 1987 before adapting a more romantic sound for solo albums such as Danilo Caymmi (1994), Sol Moreno (1995), Mistura Brasileira (1997), Retratos (2004), Alvear (2011), and Trilhas: Os Mais Bonitos Temas da Tv Brasileira (2019), which featured television themes such as “Mentiras”. Danilo Caymmi has also recorded several albums with his brother Dori and sister Nana.
