Born in Elkhart, Indiana on March 4, 1941, David Darling was a Grammy-winning jazz and new age cellist and composer. Interested in music at a young age, he began playing piano at the age of 4. At the age of 10, he studied cello and then added string bass to his arsenal of instruments in high school. While attending Indiana State University, he focused on studying classical cello. Upon graduation, he began teaching at the university for the next four years. He then moved to Nashville, Tennessee in the 1970s and worked as a studio musician while also playing cello in the Paul Winter Consort until leaving the group in 1978. Connecting with ECM Records, David Darling released Journal October, his debut album , in 1979. Remaining with ECM until 1993’s Dark Wood, David Darling continued to release a series of albums on different independent labels including The Tao of Cello (1993), Cello Blue (2001), Open Window (2003), Balance (2006), the Grammy Award-winning Prayer for Compassion (2009), Gratitude (2016) and Homage to Kindness (2019). He was also a busy sideman, recording and/or performing with artists such as Spyro Gyra, Bobby McFerrin, Peter Kater, Terje Rypdal, Ralph Towner, Tempest Williams, Ketil Bjørnstad, and many others. David Darling continued working until his death on January 8, 2021 at the age of 79.
