Lovingly dubbed as ‘The Queen of Merengue in Venezuela’, Dive Anna Pereira Sánchez (aka Diveana, born on May 20, 1972) is one of the country’s biggest pop stars. She has collaborated with numerous Venezuelan artists, including Los Amigos Invisibles, Bonny Cepeda, and Wilfrido Vargas. At the age of 13, she joined the orchestra La Única de Maracaibo as a singer, tackling genres as diverse as merengue, salsa, cumbia, and bolero. Between 1987 and 1989, she recorded five highly-successful albums with the tropical group Los Melódicos before releasing her eponymous solo debut, Diveana, in 1990. “Tus Ojos,” the first single off of the album, reached the top of the charts in several Latin American countries. Her second LP, Noches de Media Luna (1992), featured the hits “De Amor Y De Miel,” “Lo Que Yo Sé,” and “Boca Loca.” Diveana’s third album, Dame Que Te Doy (1994), found her steering away from her usual style and favoring genres such as electro-pop and Dominican merengue. After three years of legal troubles with her label, she released Vuelve A Brillar La Luz (1998), another exercise in style, ranging from house merengue to hip-hop and ballads. Following years of hiatus, she made a comeback near the end of the 2010s, releasing the singles “Poco A Poco,” (2018) “Lo Que Son Las Cosas,” (2019) and “Amigos No Por Favor” (2020).
