DJ Playero

DJ Playero is a Puerto Rican music producer who is considered one of the most significant and influential names in the development of the Puerto Rican underground music scene as well as its spread and popularization throughout the 1980s. His real name is Pedro Gerardo Torruellas Brito and he was born on November 2nd, 1964, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He is known for producing a series of mixtapes in the early 1990s that combined hip-hop and reggae rhythms with freestyle Spanish lyrics, which was influential in the creation of what we now know as the reggaeton music genre. These tapes circulated in the neighborhoods of San Juan and were picked up by various musicians who would go on to become major names in the reggaeton scene. DJ Playero’s mixtapes were also famous for featuring burgeoning young talent, such as that of reggaeton singer Daddy Yankee, who made his recording debut on the mixtape Playero 34. In the late 1990s, as the early version of the reggaeton sound started to gain popularity, DJ Playero started reissuing his old mixtapes as well as creating new ones, releasing them through a new record deal with BM Records. Along with fellow influential figures DJ Negro and DJ Eric, DJ Playero formed a new project called Los Fathers del Reggaeton, aiming to promote new urban music talents. In 2023, DJ Playero contributed to the Rauw Alejandro album SATURNO, appearing on the track “De Carolina” and ensuring that his name stays familiar for a new generation of urban music enthusiasts.
