An icon of France's punk-rock underground, Dominic Sonic was born on November 11, 1964, in Dinan, Côtes-d'Armor. He began playing guitar as a teenager and joined his first band, Kalashnikov, at 16 years old. He remained with the group for six years before going solo, releasing the debut album Cold Tears arriving in 1989. Cold Tears sold 40,000 copies in France and paved the way for an acclaimed career, with Sonic releasing five more solo albums — including 1994's Les Leurres, 1996's Essais 94/96, and 2015's Vanités #6 — during the three decades that followed. He remained active on the road, too, and even joined the Stooges during the Transmusicales de Rennes festival in 2002. Following a battle with cancer, he died on July 23, 2020, at 55 year old.
