Dragonette

Best known for their Juno-winning synthpop single "Hello," Dragonette are an electronic trio featuring vocalist Martina Sorbara, bassist/producer Dan Kurtz, and drummer Joel Stouffer. After releasing solo albums like 2002's The Cure For Bad Deeds as a fledgling folk singer, Sobrara met Kurtz — a member of popular livetronica band The New Deal — at a Canadian music festival during the early 2000s. The two formed Dragonette, released the Dragonette EP in 2005, and relocated to London to record their debut album, Galore. Released in 2007, Galore received critical acclaim but failed to sell well, resulting in the band's dismal from Mercury Records. Undeterred, Dragonette partnered with Universal Music Canada for 2009's Fixin' To Thrill, which peaked at Number 21 on the American dance chart. The album's electropop single "Pick Up The Phone" became a Top 40 hit in Canada, but its success was dwarfed by the overwhelming response to Dragonette's subsequent single, "Hello." Recorded with French DJ Martin Solveig and released in 2010, "Hello" went to Number 1 in Austria, Belgium, and the Netherlands, while becoming a platinum-selling smash in America, Canada, and the Germany. Dragonette scored another international hit that same year with "Animale," which featured Dutch dance artist Don Diablo and peaked at Number 2 on Belgium's Ultratip chart. The band then self-released their follow-up record, 2012's Bodyparts, which spawned the Top 40 single "Let It Go" and earned a Juno nomination. Following 2016's Royal Blues, Dragonette scored another Canadian hit with the gold-selling "Tokyo Nights," recorded alongside Digital Farm Animals and Shaun Frank.
