Dream Warriors

Dream Warriors was a Canadian rap duo formed in 1988. They are one of the pioneers of the jazz rap genre. Comprised of King Lou (Louis Robinson) and Capital Q (Frank Albert), Dream Warriors came together in Toronto and gradually established their jazz rap style. In 1991, they released their debut album, And Now The Legacy Begins (on 4th & B’way/Island Records). Considered one of the top jazz rap albums, it features the massive hit “My Definition of a Boombastic Jazz Style”, which reached Number 13 on the UK charts). The album also features the single “Wash Your Face in My Sink” (Number 16). By the time their second album, Subliminal Simulation, was released on Pendulum/EMI Records in 1994, the line-up had expanded to include Spek (Hussain Yoosuf) and DJ Luv (Phillip Gayle). Two singles were released from the album – “Day In Day Out” and “California Dreamin’” (not a cover of the song by the Mamas & the Papas) – but neither of them were hits. Master Plan (1996) - on EMI Records - was the band’s third album and included the singles "Float On", "What Do You Want ‘Ladies’", and "Sound Clash". In 1997, Spek and DJ Luv left Dream Warriors and they became a duo again. In 1999, EMI Records released Anthology: A Decade of Hits 1988-1998, which featured two new songs. Dream Warriors re-emerged in 2002 with their final album The Legacy Continues…, which was released only in Canada. Consisting of mostly new material, the album features the Pierre J Mix of their first hit “My Definition of a Boombastic Jazz Style”. Fifteen years later, a compilation album entitled Icon was released containing the ground-breaking jazz rap outfit’s best-known tracks.
