Jesse Hughes and Josh Homme originally formed Eagles of Death Metal as an experiment crossing the soft rock style of The Eagles with hardcore death metal, although Homme later described the results as "bluegrass slide guitar mixed with stripper drum beats and Canned Heat vocals." Their output was sporadic due to the success of Homme's other band, Queens Of The Stone Age, but their debut album Peace, Love, Death Metal in 2004 produced several tracks that caught on with the American public, several of them used in TV commercials and the soundtrack of the movie Thank You For Smoking. The duo followed this with Death By Sexy in 2006 and Heart On in 2008, which again featured tracks included in TV promotion campaigns. Using various musicians to back the charismatic pair, the band also proved a hugely popular live act, sharing stages with The Strokes, Joan Jett, Arctic Monkeys and Guns N'Roses, with whom they fell out after Axl Rose insulted them on stage.
