Ernesto Pérez (born on January 14, 1976), also known as El Chapo de Sinaloa, is a Mexican actor and singer whose style is deeply rooted in Norteño music traditions. Hailing from the small city of Badiraguato, Pérez started playing clarinet at the age of 11 and soon mastered the bass, becoming a studio musician for some regional Mexican labels. A couple of years after moving to the US, Pérez began his career by penning songs for small local labels. This eventually led to a contract deal with EMI Latin, who released El Chichi (1995) when Pérez was just 19 years old. Following a string of successful albums during the 90s, the singer released Tú, Yo y la Luna (2004), which spawned the hit “Recostada en la cama.” The single quickly became a fan favorite and earned Pérez a nomination to the Billboard Latin Awards in 2006. Te Va a Gustar (2007) proved even more successful, winning a Latin Grammy for Best Banda Album of the Year in 2008 and topping the Billboard Regional Mexican Album chart. El Chapo followed the winning streak with Para Siempre (2008), which won four Lo Nuestro awards and peaked at Number 3 on the Hot Latin Album chart. The 2010s found Pérez touring extensively and expanding his catalog even further with the release of Camina Sin Mirar Atrás (2015), almost two decades after his studio debut.
