In the mid-2000s, Matt Berninger, baritone singer of The National, and Brent Knopf, of Menomena and Ramona Falls, met at a festival and became friends. What followed was ten years of behind-the-scenes collaboration alongside their bands, amassing untapped song ideas, melodies and other aborted projects. Matt Berninger recovers some ten hours of recordings from his sidekick, and adds lyrics and melodies of his own, drawing inspiration from his teenage years. The two musicians spontaneously began exchanging files, but did not immediately plan to release an album. But after a few months, the urge arose, so they completed the material and released their debut LP Return To The Moon in 2015.
