Elisapie Isaac

Inuk singer, songwriter, musician, and filmmaker Elisapie Isaac was born in 1977 in Salluit, Quebec, Canada. The daughter of an Inuk mother and a Newfoundlander father, she grew up in the Unavik region before moving to Montreal, Canada in 1999 to study communications and journalism. She began her music career as a member of duo Taima, which also featured musician Alain Auger. The group’s self-titled debut album – which featured Elisapie Isaac singing in her native Inukitut language – won a Juno Award for Aboriginal Recording of the Year in 2005. The duo split in 2006 and she began a solo career under her first name, Elisapie. Her first musical venture outside of Taima was writing lyrics for composer Bruno Coulais’ songs featured in the film The White Planet. Her debut solo album, There Will Be Stars (2010), included songs sung in Inukitut, English, and French. Her next album, Traveling Love (2012), consisted of mostly English-language tracks and was honored with an award for English-Speaking Album of the Year at the ADISQ Gala. Elisapie Isaac’s next album, the traditional folk inspired The Ballad of the Runaway Girl (2018), found her singing in Inukitut, English, and French again and won the Other Languages award at the 2019 ADISQ Gala. She won another ADISQ award for her tour for the album the following year. She returned in 2023 with the album Inukitut, which found her covering hits by Queen, Blondie, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, and The Rolling Stones in her native language. The Inukitut album reached number 14 on Billboard’s Canadian Albums chart.
