Once described as a classical music supergroup, Ensemble Signal is a New York-based orchestra which began life as the brainchild of artistic director Lauren Radnofsky and conductor Brad Lubman. From the offset Radnofsky and Lubman set out to create something out of the ordinary by forming an orchestra which could draw upon some of the most talented performers in modern classical music. Since its debut in 2008 the ensemble has been highly praised by critics and lovers of fine classical music. In their own words the orchestra defines itself by having a diverse repertoire ranging from "pieces which are minimalist or pop-influenced through to the iconoclastic European avante-garde". In recent years the ensemble has forged close connections with the American composer Steve Reich. Reich is an enthusiastic supporter of Ensemble Signal and made the following comment about the orchestra's interpretations of his work: "Brad Lubman and Ensemble Signal have given many of the best performances of my work I have ever heard". Since its formation the ensemble has played over 150 concerts often giving premiers of newly written compositions; they have also produced nine pieces of recorded work.
