ESG

ESG (Emerald, Sapphire, & Gold), an American band from the South Bronx, New York, was formed in 1978. The group initially included sisters Renee Scroggins (vocals, guitar), Valerie Scroggins (drums, vocals), Deborah Scroggins (bass, vocals), Marie Scroggins (congas, vocals), and their friend Tito Libran (congas, vocals). ESG's breakthrough came when they were discovered by Ed Bahlman during a talent show. Their first recordings, including "Moody" and "You're No Good", were produced by Martin Hannett. The debut EP ESG was released in 1981. The band's early work, particularly the song "UFO", became highly influential, being sampled over 300 times by artists such as TLC and Public Enemy. ESG disbanded in 1983 but reunited periodically for various projects, including A South Bronx Story (2000) and Step Off (2002). Their album, What More Can You Take?, was released in 2017.
