Évariste

A scientist born in Montluel (Ain) on January 31, 1943, Joël Sternheimer is also known as Évariste, a rock singer in the 1960s. After graduating with a degree in advanced mathematics in 1964, he obtained a doctorate in theoretical physics from Lyon University in 1966, but failed the entrance examination for the CNRS. An avid rock fan, he went into song under the name Évariste to finance his research. Signed to the Disc'AZ label, following in the footsteps of sarcastic singers like Jacques Dutronc and Antoine, Évariste recorded the E=MC² and Wo I Nee EPs in 1967, including the psychedelic singles "Connais-tu l'animal qui inventa le calcul intégral?" and "Les Pommes de Lune". The following year, during the events of May '68, he joined the protest movement with the 45-turn single "La Révolution" and its B-side "La Faute à Nanterre", released by the Comité révolutionnaire d'agitation culturelle and followed by the Pathé/EMI EP Je Ne Pense Qu'à Ça, whose cover was also designed by Wolinski, and the album of the same name in the winds of sexual liberation. After a final song, "Reviens Dany, reviens" (1970), advocating the return to France of exiled leader Daniel Cohn-Bendit, Évariste left the music business to devote himself to scientific research. In 2022, Born Bad Records released the 14-track compilation Il Ne Pense Qu'à Ça (1967-1970).
