Leading exponents of Neue Deutsche Welle (New German Wave) music, Extrabreit formed in Hagen in what was then West Germany in 1978. At first the band was heavily influenced by punk music but after some lineup changes they were soon associated with NDW. Signing to Warner Music subsidiary Metronome in 1980, Extrabreit released several singles and LPs. The late 1980s saw the band break up, reform and break up once again, only to reform in 1991 with a new album. However, the band broke up again in 1998. It reformed with a new lineup in 2002 going on to release two LPs, the last of which came out in 2008.
