Fish

Lead singer of the iconic neo-progressive rock band Marillion from 1981 to 1988, William Derek Dick aka Fish went on to pursue a sustained solo career. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on April 25, 1958, he became interested in progressive rock as a teenager, then worked at various manual jobs while auditioning for bands looking for a singer. Nicknamed "Fish" by a friend because of the time he spends taking his bath, he eventually joined the young band Marillion and played a part in its success in the 1980s, making four studio albums and as many live ones. Tensions and tour fatigue led to his departure to embark on a personal journey that began with the album Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors (1990), produced with musicians from other bands and charting at No. 5 in the UK. In addition to collaborations with Tony Banks, Fish recorded a dozen more albums in his own studio, including Internal Exile (1991) and Songs from the Mirror (1993) for Polydor, in a progressive style with folk and Celtic accents. He set up his own label, Dick Bros Record Company, and named two of his compilations Yin et Yang in 1995. At the same time, a number of live recordings were released, the result of repeated tours throughout Europe to loyal audiences. Two further compilations, Kettle of Fish (88-98) and Bouillabaisse - The Best of Fish (2005), provide an overview of his music. Since the album Fellini Days (2001), his creations have been released on another independent label, Chocolate Frog Record Company. In 2020, Weltschmerz was announced as his last studio album, the artist and occasional actor wishing to pursue other avenues.
