Floating Points

Born in Manchester in 1986, neuroscientist and experimental electronic musician Sam Shepherd received critical acclaim from the music press under the name Floating Points with his 2015 debut album Elaenia. Originally conceived as a single piece, Shepherd eventually adopted a more conventional format and cut the recording into seven sections. A prodigious talent indeed, his creations were every bit as groundbreaking as early Mike Oldfield or Tangerine Dream. He had previously played with the Floating Points Ensemble, a fluid group of talented musicians who won a BBC Session Award for one of their studio sessions at Maida Vale. In 2016, Shepherd took his band to the Mojave Desert for an ambitious recording and rehearsal project ahead of their US tour, during which the band recorded a short film called Reflections. The short film was widely praised by music critics and firmly established Shepherd as one of the leading players in the field of experimental electronic music. In 2019, he released his second album, Crush. For 2021's Promises, Floating Points collaborated with jazz saxophonist Pharoah Sanders and the London Symphony Orchestra. After this critically acclaimed experience as one of the best productions of the year, the musician returned to his purely electronic style with the EP Someone Close (2022), followed by two tracks ranked on music recognition sites, "Birth4000" (2023) and "Del Oro" (2024), which can be found on the album Cascade, ranked in the UK charts.
