Flotsam and Jetsam

Flotsam and Jetsam is an American thrash metal band that was founded in 1981 in Phoenix, Arizona. The original line-up consisted of singer Eric "A.K." Knutson, guitarist Michael Gilbert and drummer Kelly David-Smith. The band initially played under various names such as Paradox and Dredlox before finally changing their name to Flotsam and Jetsam in 1984. The name comes from a chapter of the novel The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. Their debut album Doomsday for the Deceiver (1986) is considered a classic of thrash metal and was the first album ever to receive the highest rating of 6K in the British magazine Kerrang! Another milestone was the album No Place for Disgrace (1988), which also celebrated great success in the metal scene. After the departure of original bassist Jason Newsted, who joined Metallica, the band continued their career with a series of successful albums such as Cuatro (1992), Drift (1995) and The End of Chaos (2019). The band is known for their energetic and aggressive thrash metal style, which has been expanded over the years with melodic and progressive elements. Their album Blood in the Water (2021) shows that the band continues to produce relevant and powerful music even after over 40 years. In 2024, Flotsam and Jetsam returned with the album I Am the Weapon.
