Freestyle Fellowship is a rap collective formed in Los Angeles in 1991. Their vocal technique is based on improvisation and combines elements of hip-hop and jazz. Their first album, To Whom It May Concern..., followed in the footsteps of De La Soul and Gang Starr, and raised high hopes. Inner City Griots (1993) is considered one of the great rap albums of the 90s. Freestyle Fellowship's momentum was shattered by the incarceration of Self Jupiter, one of the group's four members, in 1993. Freestyle Fellowship resumed their career in 1998, but the momentum seems to have been broken, as confirmed by the weak Temptations (2001) and Shockadoom (2002).
