Fruupp

Northern Irish progressive rock band Fruupp produced four studio albums between 1971 and 1976. Formed in Belfast in 1971, it featured Vincent McCusker (vocals, guitar), Peter Farrelly (bass), Stephen Houston (keyboards, oboe) and Martin Foye (drums, percussion). After submitting a demo to Pye Records, the classically trained musicians signed with Dawn Records, the division dedicated to psychedelic and progressive artists. Popular with a student audience, Fruupp recorded the concept albums Future Legends (1973), Seven Secrets (April 1974) and The Prince of Heaven's Eyes (November 1974). In January 1975, Houston, who had left the band to devote himself to the priesthood, was replaced by keyboardist and vibraphonist John Mason, present on Modern Masquerades (1975), produced by King Crimson's Ian McDonald. The quartet was working on a fifth album, provisionally entitled Doctor Wilde's Twilight Adventure, when they decided to go their separate ways. A double live album dating from the last performances, Masquerading with Dawn, is released in 2022, following the release of several compilations such as It's All Up Now - Anthology (2004) and Wise as Wisdom - The Dawn Albums 1973-1975 (2019). On March 17, 2025, Peter Farrelly, who designed the band's covers, died at the age of 76.
