Funkdoobiest

Hailing from Los Angeles, California, the hip hop ensemble Funkdoobiest was formed in 1989 by Jason Vasquez (also known as "Son Doobie"), Tyrone Pacheco (also known as "Tomahawk Funk"), and DJ Ralph Medrano (also known as "Tha Phunky Mexican" and "DJ Ralph M"). All three members were also participants in Soul Assassins, a collective of hard-edged rappers overseen by Cypress Hill's DJ Muggs. Debuting with 1993's full-length Which Doobie U B?, Funkdoobiest scored a crossover hit with "Bow Wow Wow," which featured a sample of George Clinton's previous hit song "Atomic Dog." "Bow Wow Wow" went gold in America and appeared on several international charts, reaching number 34 on UK Singles, number 89 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 16 on US Dance Club Songs, and number 98 on US Hot R&B/Hip-Hip Songs. A second single, "Wopbabalubop," became the group's second Top 40 hit in the UK. Which Doobie U B? peaked at number 56 on the the Billboard 200 and became Funkdoobiest's highest-charting album, with the follow-up record Brothas Doobie stalling at number 115 two years later. Brothas Doobie's "Superhoes" was also released on the double-platinum soundtrack to the film Friday. 1998's The Troubleshooters failed to reach the Billboard 200, peaking instead at number 90 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Son Doobie focused on a solo career during the early 2000s, and the group returned in 2009 with an independent album, The Golden B-Boys, before officially disbanding later that year.
