GASTUNK is a groundbreaking Japanese rock band that emerged in 1983, blending hardcore punk with heavy metal, a fusion that set them apart in Japan’s indie scene. Formed by BABY after leaving EXECUTE, the band solidified its lineup in 1984 with BAKI on vocals, TATSU on bass, and later PAZZ on drums. The members Baby, Tatsu and Motokatsu. Known for their slogan "Heartful Melody," GASTUNK’s innovative sound gained nationwide attention following the release of their first single GASTUNK in 1985 and their debut album DEAD SONG. Their career highlights include the internationally acclaimed 1987 album UNDER THE SUN, with cover art by renowned artist PUSHEAD, and the 1988 release of MOTHER, recorded in Los Angeles. Their live performances, including collaborations with bands like Nuclear Assault and encounters with Metallica, solidified their reputation as pioneers in the genre. Despite disbanding in 1988, they reunited in 1999 to honor X Japan’s HIDE and have since reformed multiple times. In 2021, GASTUNK released Vintage Spirit, The Fact, their first original album in 33 years. The album The Greatest Swell (2024) highlights their enduring energy and influence, showcasing a legacy that continues to shape the Japanese rock scene with powerful melodies and genre-defying innovation.
