Billed as a girl group survival show, Girls Planet 999 began airing on South Korean television during the summer of 2021, with 99 contestants competing for a chance to join a nine-member singing group upon the show's completion. Contestants hailed from Japan, China, and South Korea, representing a blend of J-pop, Cantopop, and K-pop influences. Although most were relative newcomers, several performers had previously released music on a national or international level. Choi Yu-jin had recorded multiple Top 40 records as a member of the K-pop girl group CLC, Xu Ziyin had pursued a solo career with singles like "Say Yes" and "Love Letter," and Reina Kubo had scraped the outermost edges of the Japanese charts with her former girl group Prizmmy. Hosted by Yeo Jin-goo, Girls Planet 999 premiered its first episode on August 6, 2021, with all 99 female performers competing for a chance to advance to the subsequent round. The initial cast also appeared on the show's first publicly-released single, "O.O.O. (Over&Over&Over)," which was released that same month as the first title in Girls Planet 999's discography.
