The music career of the Indonesian songwriter and producer Glenn Fredly began in 1995 when he won the country's prestigious Cipta Pesona Bintang song contest. Shortly after winning the competition he joined the funk rock band Funk Section who he performed with for three years prior to going solo in 1998. His debut album 'GLENN' sold 50,000 copies, a creditable commercial success in a country which doesn't have a significant following for R&B music. The album's follow-up, 'Kembali', was released in 2000 and spawned the hit single 'Kasih Putih' which enjoyed extensive radio airplay and established Fredly as mainstream artist in Indonesia. Fredly cites artists such as Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones and Marvin Gaye as his primary influences and during his career has recorded over ten studio albums. In 2013 he appeared for a season as a coach on 'The Voice of Indonesia' talent show and has also had a brief flirtation with the film industry when he was involved in the production of two movies, 'Tanda Tanya' in 2011 and 'Cahaya Dari Timur: Beta Maluku' in 2014. Latterly he has built a reputation as a talented producer and has helped nurture emerging Indonesian artists such as YURA and Gilbert Pohan.
