Combining the lung power of vocalist CeeLo Green and the innovative production of Danger Mouse, neo-soul duo Gnarls Barkley burst out of the Atlanta hip-hop scene in 2006 with their iconic summer hit 'Crazy'. Green grew up singing in church gospel choirs in Gainesville, Georgia, cutting his teeth with local rap collective Goodie Mob, who scored popular, influential Southern hip-hop albums 'Soul Food' in 1995 and 'Still Standing' in 1998. Meanwhile, Danger Mouse began his career making trip hop dance tracks under the name Pelican City, before becoming a cult sensation when he mixed together The Beatles' 'White Album' and Jay Z's 'The Black Album' into the groundbreaking mash-up 'The Grey Album' in 2003. CeeLo Green and Danger Mouse first met in 1998 when Danger Mouse finished second in a talent contest and was rewarded with a DJ-slot opening for Outkast and Goodie Mob. Afterwards, he passed on a mix tape of beats to Green. It wasn't until 2003 that they really began working together, though, when Danger Mouse tapped up Green to feature on a remix for rapper Jemini and they made a demo for 'Crazy' two years later. The track grew from a cult favourite with bloggers and music critics to become the first single to top the UK charts on download sales alone. Described as post-hip hop, psychedelic soul, 'St.Elsewhere' also made it to number one in the UK and the top five in the US, and the duo picked up two Grammy Awards in 2007. They were typically eclectic and funky on second album 'The Odd Couple' and singles 'Run (I'm a Natural Disaster)' and 'Going On' in 2008, but quickly went their separate ways with Green releasing solo album 'The Lady Killer' and Danger Mouse forming Broken Bells with James Mercer of The Shins, collaborating with rapper MF Doom and producing for U2, Adele and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
