Formed in Norfolk, Virginia, the Golden Gate Quartet inaugurated gospel pop in the 1940s, helping to bring the genre out of the churches. Popular in Europe, the Golden Gate Quartet settled in France in 1959. Their version of "Oh Happy Day" remains a cross-generational hit, appreciated by audiences far beyond the gospel. Recording few albums, the Golden Gate Quartet concentrated on the stage, where contact with the audience ignited their gospel. With the genre now largely back in vogue, the Golden Gate Quartet released Incredible in October 2010. The same year saw the release of one of their countless compilations, soberly named The Best of.
