Grigory Sokolov

The story of Grigory Sokolov is that of a gifted pianist whose name was long hidden from the international public because of the USSR regime. Born in 1950 in Leningrad (St. Petersburg), he won the Tchaikovsky Competition at the age of sixteen, but was only allowed to perform abroad on four occasions between 1969 and 1979. Reticent about studio sessions, he prefers to present his repertoire to the public, and has been performing regularly in concert since the 2000s. After a long absence from the recording world, Grigory Sokolov published The Salzburg Recital in 2015 and Schubert - Beethoven the following year. In 2017, his recital of Mozart and Rachmaninov concertos is accompanied by Nadia Zhdanova's film A Conversation That Never Was. His breathtaking, mysterious technique in a wide range covering all eras and styles makes him one of the greatest pianists of his time.
